- Tether added 27 tons to its gold holdings, bringing total reserves to over 520,000 ounces.
- This expansion boosts Tether Gold’s dominance in the market and positions the company among the top 30 global gold holders.
Tether massively expanded its gold reserves, emphasizing the rising role of hard-asset backing in volatile markets. This reflects a trend of crypto players increasingly turning to tangible assets amid financial uncertainty.
Gold-Backed Stablecoins See Rapid Growth
According to Tether’s latest attestation report, the company added roughly 27 metric tons of gold to its reserves during the fourth quarter of 2025. This push boosted total physical gold holdings to 520,089.350 fine troy ounces, with a market value of approximately $2.25 billion at current prices.
The increase in reserves aligns with a sharp rise in demand for gold-backed stablecoins (XAU₮), which grew in market capitalization from around $1.3 billion to over $4 billion in 2025. Tether Gold now dominates the sector, accounting for roughly 60% of total circulating supply. Each XAU₮ token is fully backed by a fine troy ounce of physical gold, ensuring verifiability and trust for investors.
Additionally, rising geopolitical tensions, along with record-high gold prices and increasing interest from both institutional and crypto-native investors, have driven this growth. Notably, gold briefly surpassed the $5,000 per ounce milestone, climbing to around $5,110 as safe-haven demand surged.
Tether Among Global Gold Leaders
The scale of Tether’s accumulation has positioned it as a significant player in global gold markets. Data from the IMF and Jefferies indicate that Tether now ranks within the top 30 gold holders worldwide, surpassing countries like Greece, Qatar, and Australia. Tether securely stores all reserves in Switzerland and follows the London Good Delivery standards, providing institutional-grade custody.
Paolo Ardoino, Tether’s CEO, emphasized that the company manages its substantial gold holdings responsibly. He highlighted that Tether Gold provides transparency and verifiability, with each token representing vaulted physical gold that investors can independently confirm on-chain. Ardoino added that investors rapidly adopting XAU₮ reflect growing confidence in tokenized assets as reliable alternatives to traditional monetary reserves.
As digital and traditional finance converge, Tether’s bold accumulation signals the rising influence of crypto-backed gold in global markets, blending blockchain innovation with tangible, time-tested value.
