Cardano Network Split Halts ADA Trading After Software Exploit

  • Cardano experienced a network split after a software exploit disrupted transactions.
  • Investigators launched probes, engineers applied emergency fixes, and exchanges paused ADA trading.

Cardano experienced Network disruption on November 21, 2025, after a crafted delegation transaction exploited a known software vulnerability, leading to a network split. The incident caused major exchanges to halt ADA trading, prompted federal investigations, and resulted in key resignations within the development team.

How the Split Happened

Technical reports from Cardano’s engineering teams indicate that the split occurred when a malformed transaction passed validation on newer node software but was rejected by older nodes. This divergence created inconsistent ledger states across the blockchain, leading to temporary transaction failures and network instability. During the incident, block explorers displayed conflicting data, and decentralized finance applications processed operations on different chain segments, creating discrepancies in transaction records.

A developer later admitted responsibility for the incident, stating that the test transaction was performed without proper safeguards. Charles Hoskinson described the event as resembling a planned attack and confirmed that federal authorities began investigating after the developer disclosed their actions publicly.

Exchange Halts and Market Impact

In response to the network instability, major exchanges, including Coinbase and Upbit, temporarily suspended ADA deposits and withdrawals. Network confirmation times slowed, and some transactions failed as nodes worked to reconcile the forked chain. Market data showed that Cardano’s ADA token declined sharply following the incident, though it later regained a portion of its losses as the network stabilized.

Rapid Response and Recovery

Cardano engineering teams deployed emergency patches within three hours of the split. By the following day, the network achieved natural consensus, realigning all blocks and restoring stability. Despite the swift technical response, the event sparked broader industry debates about software testing practices, governance, and potential legal liabilities for developers.

Intersect, a Cardano governance organization, issued a statement confirming that law enforcement was notified because the transaction intentionally exploited the vulnerability. Shortly after the disclosure, an engineer at Input Output Global resigned, citing concerns over legal consequences arising from routine development errors.

Lessons for the Crypto Industry

This incident highlights the importance of rigorous testing, robust security practices, and clear governance in blockchain development. The Cardano network successfully recovered, but the event highlights the risks even established projects face when software vulnerabilities exploit them.
