Chainlink Launches CustodySync With Anchorage to Unlock DeFi Lending for Institutions

  • Chainlink and Anchorage launch CustodySync for institutional DeFi borrowing.
  • The system lets institutions borrow against assets held in qualified custody.

Chainlink has launched CustodySync with Anchorage Digital Bank to help institutions borrow from DeFi lending markets while keeping their assets in qualified custody. The system connects custody records with onchain lending protocols, allowing eligible assets to serve as collateral for loans.

Anchorage Digital Bank is the launch partner, using its Atlas Collateral Management platform to monitor collateral, track loan positions, and coordinate liquidations. The integration aims to give institutional borrowers access to DeFi liquidity without requiring them to move their underlying assets directly into lending contracts.

How Chainlink CustodySync Connects Institutional Assets to DeFi

CustodySync connects custodians’ collateral records with onchain lending markets. It coordinates collateral balances, pricing data, and loan activity throughout the borrowing process.

Chainlink’s Proof of Reserve publishes custody balances onchain, while transfer-restricted receipt tokens represent the collateral within the lending market. These tokens are designed for use within the integration and do not give holders a claim on the underlying assets outside that system.

Once a loan is approved, the borrowed funds move directly from the lending market to the borrower. Meanwhile, Chainlink’s Runtime Environment coordinates authorized actions and updates custody records to keep the two systems aligned.

Chainlink Data Feeds and Data Streams provide pricing information to both systems. Matching prices help ensure that collateral valuations remain consistent between the custodian and the lending market.

The system also addresses what happens when a borrower fails to maintain the required collateral level. An appointed collateral agent manages the liquidation process, while CustodySync records committed sale proceeds onchain before the transaction reaches final settlement.

This structure connects institutional custody operations with onchain lending while allowing each participant to retain its designated responsibilities.

Anchorage Atlas Manages Collateral and Liquidation Risks

Anchorage’s Atlas Collateral Management platform plays a central role in the CustodySync arrangement. It monitors collateral positions and coordinates responses when loan conditions are no longer met.

Under Anchorage’s collateral management framework, borrowers and lenders establish the terms of a loan before funds are released. These agreements specify eligible collateral, loan-to-value (LTV) thresholds, cure periods, and the actions required if a borrower’s position deteriorates.

Borrowers deposit eligible assets into a segregated vault or wallet. Atlas then monitors the position around the clock to identify changes that could trigger a margin call or liquidation.

If collateral falls below the agreed threshold, the borrower may need to supply additional assets within the specified cure period. This allows the borrower to restore the required collateral ratio before further action is taken.

Depending on the agreement and the severity of the breach, Anchorage can coordinate notifications, partial liquidations, full liquidations, or transfers of collateral to the secured party. A critical threshold may trigger immediate action when the agreement does not provide protection through a cure period.

Participants can also monitor their collateral positions through an application programming interface (API) and dashboard.

These controls are important for institutions that need clear procedures for managing collateral and responding to market volatility before accessing decentralized lending markets.

Anchorage Already Supports Institutional Bitcoin Loans Through Spark

CustodySync builds on Anchorage’s existing work connecting institutional custody with decentralized lending.

Anchorage has previously partnered with Spark to help institutions borrow against Bitcoin held at Anchorage Digital Bank. Under that arrangement, Anchorage serves as collateral agent, using Atlas to monitor loan-to-value ratios, manage payments, handle margin calls, and coordinate liquidations.

The partnership allows eligible institutions to access Spark’s lending markets while keeping their Bitcoin in qualified custody.

Anchorage has confirmed that multiple institutional borrowers have drawn loans through the arrangement, although it has not disclosed their identities or the total amount borrowed.

The setup separates collateral management from the lending protocol itself. Spark operates its lending markets, while Anchorage manages the agreed collateral procedures.

This approach addresses a key concern for institutions that want to borrow against digital assets but are reluctant to move them entirely into onchain lending contracts.

CustodySync extends this model by providing a framework that can connect custodians’ existing systems with onchain lending markets. Its broader application will depend on participating custodians, supported assets, and the features available through each integration.

Anchorage Expands Its Institutional DeFi and Staking Services

The CustodySync launch is part of Anchorage’s broader effort to give institutional clients access to digital asset services while maintaining custody and operational controls.

In October 2026, Anchorage joined Sui’s Hashi launch coalition, which announced more than $500 million in capital commitments for Bitcoin-related financial applications. The initiative outlined two institutional access routes: Atlas for firms using qualified custody and the Porto wallet for firms managing their own assets.

Hashi’s design keeps Bitcoin on its native network while enabling the use of hBTC, a Bitcoin-linked asset on Sui, in financial applications. The initiative’s rollout is phased, with participating partners integrating their services at different stages.

Anchorage has also expanded its access to stablecoin and staking products.

In September, Frgmnt announced institutional access to its fUSD stablecoin and sfUSD staking product through Anchorage’s custody infrastructure. The arrangement allows institutions to hold, mint, stake, unstake, and redeem the assets without establishing a separate custody relationship.

Frgmnt issues fUSD against USDC and deploys the backing across selected lending markets. Eligible holders can stake fUSD to receive sfUSD, which provides exposure to the rewards generated by those strategies.

In July, Anchorage integrated Lido staking into its custody platform, allowing institutional clients to mint and burn wrapped staked Ether (wstETH) within its existing custody infrastructure. The integration brought staking operations closer to the governance, reporting, and settlement processes institutions already use.

Together, these initiatives show how Anchorage is extending its institutional infrastructure beyond asset safekeeping into lending, staking, and other onchain financial services.

What Chainlink CustodySync Means for Institutional DeFi Adoption

Chainlink’s CustodySync launch highlights an effort to reduce the operational barriers institutions face when accessing decentralized lending.

Traditional institutional lending relies on established custody arrangements, collateral monitoring, and clearly defined liquidation procedures. DeFi markets offer another source of liquidity, but institutions may hesitate to use them when doing so requires moving assets away from their existing custody arrangements.

CustodySync is designed to connect these two environments. It combines onchain collateral representation and pricing data with custody records and collateral management services.

However, the launch does not mean that every custodian or digital asset can immediately use the system. Available features may differ between custodians, and participation depends on the relevant integrations and loan agreements.

For institutional borrowers, the potential benefit is access to decentralized lending while retaining qualified custody of eligible assets. For DeFi protocols, the arrangement could create a way to serve institutional clients through established collateral management infrastructure.

The extent of adoption will depend on how many custodians and lending markets support the system, which assets become eligible, and whether institutions find the structure suitable for their risk and compliance requirements.
