Ripple Wins Final US Approval for National Trust Bank as RLUSD Market Cap Hits $2.5 Billion

  • Ripple secures final US approval for a national trust bank as RLUSD reaches a $2.5 billion market cap.
  • The charter expands institutional custody services but does not directly benefit XRP holders.

Ripple has received final approval from the US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) to establish Ripple National Trust Bank (RNTB), allowing it to manage RLUSD reserves and expand institutional crypto custody services. The approval comes as Ripple USD (RLUSD) reaches a market capitalization of approximately $2.5 billion.

Granted on October 26, 2026, the approval follows preliminary conditional authorization in December 2025. However, the charter does not allow Ripple to offer traditional retail banking services, such as deposit accounts or general lending.

What Ripple’s National Trust Bank Approval Means for RLUSD

Ripple National Trust Bank will operate under federal supervision, focusing on reserve management, collateral trust services and digital asset custody.

The bank will oversee segregated reserve assets backing RLUSD and act as a collateral trustee for stablecoin holders. It will also be authorized to provide fiduciary cryptocurrency custody services to Ripple’s affiliated businesses and external institutional clients.

These services could help financial institutions access digital asset infrastructure through a federally supervised institution. They also give Ripple a clearer regulatory structure as demand for stablecoin payments and institutional crypto custody grows.

However, the approval does not mean every service is already operational. Ripple has indicated that its institutional custody capabilities will become available upon opening.

RLUSD Issuance Will Remain Under New York Regulation

Despite the new federal charter, Ripple will not transfer RLUSD issuance to its national trust bank.

Standard Custody & Trust Company, Ripple’s existing limited-purpose trust company regulated by the New York Department of Financial Services, will continue issuing the stablecoin. The arrangement separates issuance from the federal trust bank’s reserve management and custody responsibilities.

BNY will remain RLUSD’s primary reserve custodian, while monthly independent third-party attestations will report the stablecoin’s circulating supply and reserve holdings.

Launched in December 2024, RLUSD is backed by US dollar deposits, US government securities and other cash equivalents. Its market capitalization of approximately $2.5 billion highlights the scale of Ripple’s stablecoin business as the company expands its institutional services.

Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse said the approval demonstrates that cryptocurrency infrastructure and regulated banking can work together. The new institution is expected to support activities across payments, digital asset custody and capital markets.

Ripple Approval Comes as US Stablecoin Rules Develop

Ripple’s final approval follows a wider push by cryptocurrency companies to secure federal banking charters.

In December 2025, the OCC granted preliminary conditional approvals to Ripple, Circle, BitGo, Fidelity Digital Assets and Paxos. Circle subsequently received final approval for its national trust bank in July 2026, while other applicants continued through the regulatory process.

The developments come after the passage of the GENIUS Act in July 2025, which established a federal framework for payment stablecoins.

On October 21, 2026, the OCC issued final implementing regulations covering reserve assets, redemptions, risk management, audits and supervision. The rules are scheduled to take effect on January 18, 2027.

Additional requirements concerning anti-money laundering and sanctions compliance remain subject to further rulemaking.

For Ripple, the national trust bank charter creates a federally supervised foundation for expanding RLUSD-related services while keeping issuance under its existing New York-regulated subsidiary.

Does Ripple’s Bank Approval Affect XRP?

The approval is an important development for Ripple, but its direct focus is RLUSD and institutional digital asset custody rather than XRP.

The charter does not change XRP’s legal classification, alter its token supply or grant XRP holders a direct financial entitlement. It also does not guarantee that demand for XRP will increase following the announcement.

However, Ripple’s ability to expand its regulated custody and payment infrastructure could support its broader business relationships with financial institutions. Greater institutional use of Ripple’s services may create additional opportunities for the company, although any effect on XRP demand will depend on how those services develop and whether they generate greater use of the XRP Ledger.

For XRP holders, the distinction between Ripple’s corporate growth and the token’s market performance remains important.

What Comes Next for Ripple and RLUSD?

With final approval secured, Ripple’s next challenge is to turn its regulatory authorization into operational services and sustained institutional adoption.

The national trust bank gives the company a federally supervised structure for reserve management and fiduciary custody, while RLUSD issuance remains with its existing New York-regulated subsidiary.

As US stablecoin regulations develop and financial institutions explore blockchain-based payments, Ripple will need to demonstrate that its expanded infrastructure can attract clients and support practical use cases.

The approval marks a significant regulatory milestone for Ripple. Its longer-term impact will depend on how effectively the company uses the new charter to expand RLUSD adoption and its institutional digital asset business.
