Pi Network Launches Subscription Smart Contracts on Testnet for Recurring Payments

  • Pi Network has introduced subscription smart contracts on its Testnet, enabling recurring payments for services like e-commerce and digital tools.
  • The feature allows users to approve spending limits while keeping funds in their wallet until each billing cycle occurs.

Pi Network has introduced a new smart contract capability on its Testnet focused on subscription payments. This marks an important step toward supporting real-world business models on blockchain.

Subscriptions are widely used in services like streaming, e-commerce, and digital tools. However, they have been difficult to implement cleanly on blockchain systems until now.

Subscription Model Comes to Blockchain

The new feature brings recurring payment support into the Pi ecosystem. It is designed to allow developers to build services that charge users regularly without relying on complex external systems.

This makes it easier to create blockchain-based applications that behave like traditional digital services, such as monthly memberships or recurring access tools.

How the Smart Contract Works

The subscription smart contract allows users to approve a spending limit for recurring payments. Instead of signing every transaction, the user gives permission once within defined conditions.

Key points of the system include:

  • Users approve a budget for recurring charges
  • Billing can run on schedules such as monthly cycles
  • Funds stay in the user’s wallet until a charge is made
  • Payments only execute if a sufficient balance is available

This structure keeps user control intact while still allowing automation of payments.

Key Technical Innovation

Subscription systems already exist in blockchain environments, but they often come with limitations. Some require off-chain coordination or repeated approvals, which adds friction for users and developers.

In contrast, Pi’s approach avoids requiring a new signature for every billing cycle while still keeping funds under user control until needed.

On networks like Ethereum, earlier proposals such as subscription standards and account abstraction introduced similar ideas, but they often rely on additional infrastructure layers or external coordination.

Pi’s model aims to simplify this process by reducing complexity while maintaining security and user control.

PiRC2 and Developer Testing

To support review and feedback, Pi has released the second Pi Request for Comment (PiRC2). This gives developers and reviewers a chance to study the design in detail.

The goals of PiRC2 include:

  • Identifying bugs or edge cases
  • Improving contract design before Mainnet rollout
  • Gathering technical feedback from developers
  • Testing subscription flows in real conditions

The smart contract is also undergoing external audits to improve reliability and security.

What This Means for Developers and Users

For developers, this update opens the door to building real subscription-based applications on Pi’s ecosystem. These could include digital services, e-commerce platforms, or recurring access tools.

For users, it introduces a system where payments can be automated without losing control of their wallet funds.

The focus remains on testing and refinement before full Mainnet deployment, but the direction points toward more practical blockchain use cases.

The introduction of subscription smart contracts on Pi Testnet shows progress toward practical blockchain applications. By focusing on recurring payments with user control, Pi Network is exploring how Web3 systems can support everyday digital services in a simpler way.
