Vitalik Buterin Calls for Mandatory Diffusion to Prevent Power Concentration

  • Vitalik Buterin warns that unchecked centralization in tech, government, and finance poses serious risks.
  • He proposes mandatory diffusion and adversarial interoperability to ensure openness and prevent power concentration.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has sparked discussion with his latest blog post, Balance of Power, highlighting the dangers of modern centralization. He argues that traditional checks and balances have eroded in the 21st century, allowing “Big Business,” “Big Government,” and “Big Mob” to consolidate power rapidly. Technological advances and automation, Buterin notes, have accelerated this process, enabling powerful actors to dominate at unprecedented speed.

Mandating Diffusion

Buterin proposes a solution he calls “mandatory diffusion,” emphasizing the need to force openness and interoperability on closed systems. He argues that natural friction is no longer sufficient to prevent extreme centralization, and diffusion must be actively engineered. One key method is “adversarial interoperability,” which creates tools that interact with existing platforms without needing their permission. Examples include ad blockers, AI filters, and decentralized systems for value transfer that bypass centralized financial chokepoints.

He also points to Sci-Hub as an example of mandatory diffusion in action. It enforces fairness in scientific access and challenges centralized control.

Pluralism, Morality, and the Role of Crypto

Buterin advocates for a “pluralism morality,” balancing impactful innovation with safeguards against hegemonic dominance. In the crypto world, he cites Ethereum-based liquid staking protocol Lido, which holds roughly 24% of staked ETH. Unlike a centralized entity of similar size, Lido remains less threatening because of its decentralized structure, a DAO with multiple operators ensuring no single actor controls the majority stake.

Through these examples, Buterin illustrates how crypto technologies can align with diffusion principles, supporting openness and accountability while encouraging technological progress.

The blog post underscores a crucial challenge of the 21st century: maintaining a flourishing civilization without extreme concentration of power. Buterin’s call for mandatory diffusion and engineered openness offers a roadmap for preventing centralization in both technology and society. By embracing adversarial interoperability, pluralism, morality, and decentralized structures, it may be possible to safeguard innovation and fairness in an era dominated by powerful actors.
